CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. -- One lane of a bridge collapsed in a Cherokee County creek on Wednesday morning, apparently smashed by flood-borne debris.
Cherokee County Bridge CollapseThe 80-foot bridge is on Old Chester Road and spans Kings Creek near the York County line.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation said the collapse happened before 5 a.m. Wednesday.Fire Chief Kenneth Manning says the debris pushed against the utility-pole-sized supports and caused them to buckle.Images from the ground and Sky 4 show that a large amount of debris is piled up against the upstream side of the bridge.DOT officials estimated that there were more than 20 tons of logs and brush and other debris.Officials said that a driver was on the road shortly after the collapse, at about 5:40 a.m. The driver's car overturned when he swerved to avoid the collapsed area of the bridge. The driver was not injured. There was also a report of an abandoned house falling in the creek.Cherokee County officials said that the road usually carries about 300 cars a day.PDF: Detour Map For Damaged Cherokee County Bridge
