GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Greenville County was among those counties that saw dismal voter turnout for Tuesday's primary.Despite Greenville County's investment of about
$178, 000 paid to staff and host 139 precincts, turnout in individual polling places ranged from 6 to 8 percent, leaving several precincts with voter turnouts in the single digits. That means the average cost for every vote cast in the county was about $10.
Greenville County Election Director Conway Belangia would not speculate as to what kept voters away from the polls.Belnagia said, "Nobody knows how voters will react or act. And we don't know when they're going to show up. We don't know if they're going to vote early or at lunch time or late in the afternoon, because every time we think we have them figured out, they prove us wrong."Election officials estimated that overall, less than 20 percent of the state's 2.3 million registered voters turned out for Tuesday's voting. Some Winners, Others Too Close To CallIn some Upstate races, the winners were clear long before 100 percent of the votes were counted -- but others will end with recounts. And a total of 21 elections will decided in run-offs.More than two dozen Upstate county offices were contested, including primaries for several sheriffs' offices, including Greenville, Anderson, Union and Pickens Counties.Greenville Sheriff Steve Loftis won by a large margin over challenger Stephen Salter.Greenville County ResultsIn Anderson County, it was a different story, where Sheriff David Crenshaw and challenger John Skipper ran neck-in-neck, splitting the votes 50-50 for most of the night. With 100 percent of the votes counted, Skipper had 11,081 votes to Crenshaw's 10,905. The closeness of the race will lead to an automatic recount. Also in Anderson County, in the hotly contested race for Republican Tenth Circuit Solicitor candidate, Chrissy Adams defeated Sarah Drawdy by 59 to 41 percent. There is no Democratic opposition for the office.Anderson County ResultsThe Union County Democratic primary for sheriff will go to a run off, since Sheriff Howard Wells got 47 percent of the vote and David Taylor had 46 percent. Troy Brewington was a distant third with 7 percent.Union County ResultsPickens County also saw a fairly close race between two of the competitors for sheriff. Sheriff David Stone got 51 percent of the vote to Rick Clark's 40 percent, with Brian Garrett far behind with 9 percent.Pickens County Results
