Spartanburg County and Spartanburg will get a total of 13 new deputies and police officers as part of a federal community policing grant, South Carolina U.S. Attorney Walt Wilkins announced Friday. The $975,000 grant is part of $2.25 million in community policing grants going to law enforcement in the state. The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The funding will pay for up to 75% of the total salary and benefits of each new officer for three years, up to $75,000.
Local law enforcement agencies must pick up the rest of the cost."I am delighted that our local law enforcement partners are receiving these funds to put additional officers on the street," Wilkins said in a news release announcing the grants. In addition to the three-year grant, all agencies must retain the COPS-funded officers positions for at least one additional complete local budget cycle. The grants are intended to enhance the community policing capacity of local law enforcement agencies to address violent crime.Besides Spartanburg, grants were awarded to Florence, Myrtle Beach, Richand County and West Columbia.Almost $20 million was awarded nationwide to agencies in 32 states and Puerto Rico through the COPS program. South Carolina received more money than any other state than Florida, which received nearly $3.4 million dollars.
