Seneca, S.C. -- Friday night’s football game between Pendleton High School and Seneca High had special meaning, especially for the Pendleton players. Every play on the field was for Avery Robinson, a young man who died this week after his pancreas ruptured. His brother, Harold, is a Senior on the Pendleton team, a defensive linebacker. His usual number is 52, but Friday night he played for 81, his brother’s number on the JV team.
Harold hugged and kissed his mother before the game, and accepted a ball signed by Clemson coach Tommy Bowden. Avery volunteered to help out with the varsity team, while playing on the the junior varsity. His coach says they thought about cancelling the JV game Thursday, but decided not to because Avery would have wanted them to play. Every play on the field in both varsity and JV games was dedicated to Avery’s memory. The funeral is tomorrow. The JV team will wear uniforms, and several players will serve as pallbearers. Pendleton High won its game over Seneca tonight, by a score of 16-14.
