Local Volunteers Go To New Orleans For Storm Assistance

ANDERSON, S.C. -- In light of the impending storm barreling toward New Orleans, the MedShore Ambulance Strike Team in Anderson is gearing up to help.Thirty paramedics are expected to leave for the Gulf Coast Thursday night, where Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to make landfall on Tuesday.The men and women will help with evacuations from nursing homes and hospitals, if necessary.
"Ever since Katrina, the government has been a lot more proactive in taking earlier preventive measures," said MedShore Strike Team member Don McCown.Friday marks the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. In 2005, some Strike Team members were in the New Orleans area for a month.Some people with the Upstate chapter of the American Red Cross will also go to Baton Rouge to help with the storm.The four volunteers said they're prepared to help the affected areas once Gustav hits land.The American Red Cross urged everyone to be prepared for future hurricanes by taking three steps.Get a kit Make a plan Be informed Disaster supply kits should include water, non-perishable food, a radio, flashlight and extra batteries for both. Those affected will also need a first aid kid and necessary medications, according to the Red Cross.
