Piedmont, S.C. -- A tense situation developed in an Anderson County neighborhood late Tuesday night.

Anderson County deputies were called to an area on River Road off Highway 86 in Piedmont at about 6:20.

Investigators say they found 37-year-old Jeffery Doyle Gilliland armed with a gun, standing in the woods, threatening to commit suicide.

Deputies on the scene say he pointed the gun at them, prompting them to call in the SWAT team and block off the road.

Negotiators were able to get the man to surrender at about 8 p.m.

Gilliland was taken in to custody.

No word on any charges in the case.
