SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- A man is charged with murder in connection with a shooting death that happened inside an SUV Monday morning.Because the shooting happened in one location and it was reported in another, it took police from several different Upstate agencies to figure out what happened.Police became aware of the shooting after two men flagged down help near the intersection of Daniel Morgan Avenue and West Main Street in downtown Spartanburg.
Witness Scott Newman was one of the first to approach the SUV."I just heard a whole bunch of yelling and just came to see what was going on," he said,Newman said, "One of the guys just pulled a gun out and started waving it in the air so that's when I called the cops."Officers arrived and took the two men into custody, and then a third man was found dead inside the Dodge Durango. The Spartanburg County Coroner said Nelson Fernando Tabares, 30, of Greer, died from a gunshot wound to the head.A witness told investigators that Manuel Antonio Marin-Arredondo had offered a ride to Tabares at a Greenville nightclub.According to the witness, Marin-Arredondo and the passenger started arguing as they left the nightclub. The argument intensified to the point that Tabares had attempted to grab the steering wheel and was shot.Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright said, "We don't know at this point if the argument stemmed from money, drugs or just plain argument. We don't know at this point."Wright said, "From what I gather they were partying -- out partying around."The intersection was shut down for a few hours during the investigation that is being headed by the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office.Investigators said the driver of the SUV, Manuel Antonio Marin-Arredondo, 41, of Greenville, shot Tabares in the back seat while they were driving on Highway 29 near Interstate 85. But for some reason they didn't pull the vehicle over until they got to downtown Spartanburg.Marin-Arredondo is charged with murder. Investigators said that Marin-Arredondo used the last name of Martin as an alias on a prior arrest. He is being held in the Spartanburg County Jail."The suspect is being somewhat cooperative," Wright said. "I mean he's trying to tell us what went on."The other passenger in the SUV is considered to be a witness and will not be charged.
