National League Game Capsules

POSTED: 12:53 am EDT July 25, 2008

(Sports Network) - Carlos Delgado's two-run double in the eighth inning provided the winning margin, and the New York Mets moved into first place in the National League East with a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the rubber match of a three-game set at Shea Stadium. Oliver Perez allowed a run on six hits and struck out a season-high 12 in 7 2/3 innings but didn't factor in the decision for the Mets, who have won three of four and lead the Phils by one game in the East. Aaron Heilman (1-3) retired one batter to earn the win, while Billy Wagner notched his 26th save. David Wright knocked in the other run for the Mets, who managed just four hits as a team. J.C. Romero (4-3) pitched the eighth and took the loss for the Phillies, losers in four of their last five. The loss spoiled a brilliant performance by Jamie Moyer, who allowed a run on just two hits in seven frames, striking out six and walking three. Jayson Werth's home run provided the scoring for the Phillies, while Eric Bruntlett went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles while starting in place of Jimmy Rollins, who was held out of the starting lineup after he arrived late to the stadium. Rollins appeared as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning, grounding into a game-ending fielder's choice.

Final Score: San Francisco 1, Washington 0

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Cain threw a four-hit shutout and Dave Roberts singled home the winning run in the eighth inning as the San Francisco Giants completed a three-game sweep over the Washington Nationals with a 1-0 victory that lasted a mere two hours. Cain (6-8) spearheaded the Giants' first home sweep of the season, as the club completed a seven-game season-series sweep of the Nationals. The righty did not walk a batter and managed four strikeouts, tossing 81 of his 113 pitches for strikes in his first shutout since 2006. Roberts, in his first start since April 7, was 2- for-4 at the plate, while Aaron Rowand added two hits for San Francisco, which was swept in three games by Milwaukee coming into the series. Tim Redding (7-5) threw the first complete game of his seven-year career, but took the loss after allowing a run on seven hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Ryan Zimmerman and Cristian Guzman both doubled in the Nationals' sixth loss in eight games.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 9, San Diego 1

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Yoslan Herrera was solid on the mound to pick up his first major league win, and the Pittsburgh Pirates made short work of the San Diego Padres, 9-1, in the opener of a four-game set. Herrera (1-1) tossed six innings of scoreless, six-hit ball while fanning four batters and walking just one. Xavier Nady and Jason Bay clubbed solo homers for the Pirates, who have rattled off four straight wins after a five-game skid. Nate McLouth added a two-run shot and finished with three RBI. Clay Hensley (1-1) took the loss as he was touched for six runs on seven hits. Hensley, who has not started since last August and has made just three relief appearances this season, got the call in place of left-hander Randy Wolf, who was dealt to Houston earlier this week. Adrian Gonzalez knocked in the only run for San Diego, which has dropped three straight and 9-of-10 overall.

Final Score: Chicago 6, Florida 3

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Aramis Ramirez keyed a four-run fifth inning with a two-run double and Carlos Zambrano tossed seven strong innings, as the Chicago Cubs downed the Florida Marlins, 6-3, in the opener of a four-game series at Wrigley Field. Zambrano (11-4) allowed two runs on six hits with six strikeouts for the Cubs, who continued their strong play at home. It was a welcomed change for the club, which returned home after a 2-4 road trip and now owns the best home record in the majors at 38-12. Ronny Cedeno and Henry Blanco both added solo home runs in the win. Hanley Ramirez belted a two-run homer for the Marlins, who have lost two straight and five of their last eight games overall. Scott Olsen (6-5), a native of the Chicago metropolitan area, started on the hill for the Marlins and allowed all six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Earlier Thursday, the Cubs placed pitcher Kerry Wood on the 15-day disabled list with a blister on his right index finger. The move is retroactive to July 14. The club will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's game.

Final Score: Milwaukee 4, St. Louis 3

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Ryan Braun clubbed a two-run homer with one out in the top of the ninth inning to lift the surging Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals and complete their first-ever four-game sweep in the Gateway City. Ryan Franklin, who came on in the eighth for St. Louis, fanned Ray Durham to begin the ninth, then served up a single to J.J. Hardy before Braun drove an 0-1 fastball over the wall in left-center for his 26th home run of the season. Prince Fielder followed with a double, but Franklin retired Corey Hart and Bill Hall to end the inning. Salomon Torres struck out the side in the bottom half to notch his 19th save. Braun finished 4-for-4 with a walk for the red-hot Brewers, who have won eight games in a row. Hardy was 3-for-5 and scored twice, while Fielder went 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Ben Sheets gave up three runs -- two earned -- on four hits in seven innings for Milwaukee, which remains a game back of the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. The comeback made a winner out of Eric Gagne (3-2), who tossed a scoreless eighth. Rick Ankiel and Albert Pujols knocked in the runs for the Cardinals, whose four-game slide comes on the heels of a five-game winning streak. Skip Schumaker had two hits and scored a run. St. Louis starter Todd Wellemeyer went five innings, surrendering two runs on five hits while walking five. Franklin (3-4) was charged with his fifth blown save. The loss dropped the Cardinals four games behind the Cubs.
