GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Imagine having to explain to your wife why a "Girls Gone Wild!" five-DVD collection showed up in your mailbox."She asked if I had gone out and ordered this which, of course, (I said) 'no'!," Phil Yanov, President of the GSA Technology Council, told WYFF News 4's Tim Waller.Actually, Yanov's wife knew from the start that neither she nor her husband had ordered the DVDs, which were addressed to her and charged to her credit card.
Both Yanovs are frequent online shoppers and they believe her credit card number fell into the wrong hands."My wife thinks that she ordered from a site that she thought was reputable, and somehow the card got diverted," Yanov said. This is not the first time consumers have received unauthorized shipments of videos or DVDs from "Girls Gone Wild!"In 2003, parent company Mantra Films, Inc. was fined by the Federal Trade Commission for "shipping unordered videos and DVDs to consumers and charging their credit cards without their consent."The Yanovs have been unsuccessful in getting the charge of $49 taken off their credit card."We've called and said 'we didn't order them, we want to send them back'," he said. " 'How do we do that, (we ask)?' 'Well, we show that you ordered them.' We just kind of fight back and forth."WYFF News 4 contacted a customer service representative at "Girls Gone Wild!" in southern California. The rep confirmed that the company has been "receiving a lot of complaints about unordered shipments lately."He confirmed that the company attempted to ship a second DVD collection to the Yanovs, but said the Yanovs' credit card was declined.Yanov told WYFF News 4 that he cancelled his wife's credit card to prevent a second unauthorized shipment."For us, it's like mild toxic waste. I mean, how do you wrap it up and get rid of it?" Yanov said.Various FTC complaints:
