20 Ways To Save At The Grocery Store

POSTED: 4:42 pm EDT April 28, 2008

  1. Shop by yourself
  2. Stick to the shopping list - don't resist!
  3. Use cash only
  4. For only a few items needed, carry it all
  5. Understand shelving: Never just grab from the middle of the shelf. Your better deals will be below or above.
  6. Get serious about coupons. You can save about 50% by using them
  7. Play "Survivor" once a quarter. Skip the store and save the cash you would have spent.
  8. Learn to cook. Much of your money goes to eating out, tipping and drinks. Besides, do you really know how clean it is in the kitchen or if they accidentally dropped your steak on the floor? I have seen this happen with my own eyes.
  9. Buy less expensive and slow cook, tenderize or use a pressure cooker. Today's appliances for this type of cooking are easier to work with than in the past.
  10. Make less when cooking. This prevents waste and leftovers
  11. Watch the cashier at the checkout. Many mistakes are made at the register. Know what items are on sale and at what price. Have coupons and check partially filled. Position yourself well and watch the items being rung up.
  12. Buy frozen vegetables. They are "flash" frozen and just as good as fresh but much cheaper, especially for out of season goods.
  13. Clean out your fridge and make a great pasta dinner, soup, casserole or pot pie. All those leftover vegetables, bacon bits, grated cheese, etc. can make a super fast and inexpensive meal. This is called Mulligan stew and you'll be surprised to find out how tasty it can be.
  14. Make your own healthy mix of granola or muffins. Fill a sandwich bag to take to work or for later, in the car for kids. The key is to make ahead of time before you need or want it. Then, voila!
  15. Serve reasonable helpings. This prevents waste especially if your family doesn't like leftovers. This keeps weight down and is healthier.
  16. Avoid "convenience" foods. They really cost. Buy a Hostess ham and have the butcher slice it for you. Make your own TV dinners by using leftovers and covering them before freezing. Later, it will be a nice surprise.
  17. Save the juice from all canned fruit. I use as added flavor in juice, 7 Up/Sprite/Sierra Mist and Jello. It is wonderful.
  18. Save the ends of breads. Freeze and make own bread crumbs or for crumb topping over casseroles.
  19. Never throw away old bananas again. Make banana bread or banana pudding, or use a banana with ice, fruit juice and yogurt for a smoothie. And, while you are at it, the skin can be used to polish silver.
  20. Make your own recipes for pancake syrup, cocoa mix, salsa, seasonings, shake n' bake for meat coatings, etc.
