GREENVILLE, S.C. -- It looks like Aladdin's lamp, and people who use it say it works magic on clogged sinuses.

It's called the neti pot.

A little saline is added to warm water.

The tip of the spout is placed inside one nostril, and the user tilts his or her head to the side. The water is gently poured in, it flows through the sinuses, and flows out the other nostril.

It's important to keep breathing through the mouth during the process.

As WYFF News 4's Carol Goldsmith found, those who use it claim it offers relief during cold and allergy season.

Sharon Cooper works at Garner's Natural Foods, a place that also sells the neti pots.

"Over the years, I've just had so many sinus infections, outside allergies to the pollen," says Sharon, "And I just started using the neti pot several years ago and I just haven’t had a sinus infection in two years."

Another option may be slightly easier to use. It’s called a NeilMed, and it’s available from drugstores. It uses a squeeze bottle, instead of the gravity-aided Neti pot.
