School Greets State Teacher Of Year

An Anderson County teacher arrived at school Monday morning to a huge celebration.

There was a bugler, a red carpet and dozens of signs to welcome South Carolina newly crowned Teacher of the Year.

The entire student body waited at the bus ramp to greet her.

At 10:45 a.m. Calhoun Academy principal Ann Self called teacher Jenna Hallman.

"I'm looking for South Carolina's Teacher of the Year," Self said. "Could you help me? I have some people who'd like to see you, but more than anything, they'd like to see your car."

Minutes later, Mrs. Hallman drove up to Calhoun Academy of the Arts in a BMW Z4 Roadster, which she gets to use for the next year.

Her other prized included a Dell computer and a Smartboard ... and $25,000 cash.

Hallman, who usually drives a minivan, said she is getting used to the star treatment – and the fancy car.

"I actually took it to the grocery store," she said. "I have two boys and a husband so I buy I lot of groceries. I shoved them in the Z4, there was no way I was taking that minivan."

Jenna Hallman is the science specialist at Calhoun. She's been teaching for eleven years.

Hallman is the first teacher from Anderson County to win state teacher of the year. Next school year, Hallman will get a year's sabbatical to travel the state and show off her teaching techniques to other teachers.
