Reedy Riverfest

Behind the Peace Center Amphitheatre along the banks of the Reedy River

Greenville’s Friends of the Reedy River will host the city’s first annual Riverfest event downtown on Saturday, September 6. The outdoor festivities will last from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind the Peace Center Amphitheatre along the banks of the Reedy River; Riverfest will include a bounce castle, ecological tours, family-friendly activities, children’s games, concessions and live music by the Fine Art Ramblers.

Reedy Riverfest is open to the public and there is no cost for admission. Food, beverages and some activities will have nominal costs. Proceeds from the event will fund the group’s aims: protecting, conserving and restoring the Reedy River to improve and ensure its sustainability as a natural resource.

Remember the feeling of first learning to ride a bicycle on your own—without training wheels and without a parent'sbalancing hand? Remember that sudden rush of freedom?

Cub Scout Pack 94, Pendleton SC is sponsoring a bicycle skills event designed to teach bicyclists the skills they need in order to be better cyclists. By learning bike handling and traffic skills, one can enjoy bicycling more and reduce the chance of injury.
This event is made up of a series of stations, each dealing with an important aspect of safe cycling. Participants will have their bicycles inspected and will then learn about and practice bicycle-handling skills that will increase their enjoyment of bicycling and could some day save their lives. Parents are invited to participate, too.

Foreclosure Prevention Clinic

The is a one-day, free foreclosure prevention clinic for Upstate homeowners at risk of defaulting on their mortgage.

Offered through the Homeownership Resource Center, the clinic will take place on Saturday, September 13, at Spartanburg Community College, 523 Chesnee Highway (Highway 11) in Gaffney, S.C., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This free event will allow homeowners who are facing foreclosure, or behind on their mortgage payments, to meet one-on-one with a HUD-approved counselor to discuss their financial options.



GIANT Fundraiser Yard Sale for STRIDES Tutoring

Visit our yard sale and help needy children get back on track at school! STRIDES, a nonprofit tutoring program, is having its annual fundraiser for students failing in school. Proceeds provide tutoring for needy children of the Upstate. STRIDES offers individualized instruction for ages 7-20 who are below grade level in reading, math, or other basic skills. Our four locations are Greer, Ft. Inn, Traveler’s Rest, and Cherrydale.

United Ministries 2008 Walk for the Homeless

Points of Departure: Vessel Forms from the State Art Collection

From the hands and clay of South Carolina artists, “Points of Departure: Vessel Forms from the State Art Collection” takes a visual journey with ceramic vessels and their evolution in the contemporary ceramic world Sept. 2 – Oct. 26 at the ARTS Center in Clemson. The public is invited to a reception from 7-9 p.m. Sept. 19.

Curated by Sue Grier, a ceramic artist and adjunct lecturer in visual arts at Clemson University, the exhibition includes 16 pieces of ceramic artwork selected from the S.C. Arts Commission State Art Collection. The artwork is by 16 professional or teaching ceramic artists, including four artists from the upstate and three from the midlands. Select artists will also have their current work included in the show to bring a visual representation that rounds out the evolution of the vessel form in contemporary ceramic art.

Additional events hosted by the ARTS Center include a curator’s talk Sept. 19, a guest gallery talk by Clemson Art Department Chair Mike Vatalaro at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 15, and a pottery and ceramic art sale that runs throughout the exhibition.

Candlelight Tour
